When looking up Social Science or Economics terms, make use of the UB Libraries’ excellent collection of subject-specific dictionaries and encyclopedias. The Libraries offer reference tools in Print and Online. Please note, however, that encyclopedia entries are reference materials, not journal articles. Reference materials provide overviews and a starting point, but they are not academic journal articles. For these, see the “Articles” tab above.

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics (Durlauf and Blume, 2008)An online version of Durlauf and Blume’s 2008 print dictionary. This is a great starting point when looking up economic definitions.

International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Darity, 2008)This is another good place to look up Social Science terms. Be sure to search the “within publication” box on the right side of the screen.

Gale Virtual Reference LibraryA database of over 100 reference books, the “History” section contains general overviews. These include China’s History (2011) and China’s Culture (2011), which contain articles like “The Concepts of Economy and Wealth China's Culture.” These works are meant as a starting point, directing you toward finding peer-reviewed articles and books. When looking up economic terminology and concepts, Gale’s Social Sciences collection will also be useful. International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (2008) is just one example of the resources in this collection.

Blackwell Reference OnlineA collection of encyclopedias, dictionaries, and guides to assist you in finding resources for your projects. The Economics section, which contains works including A Companion to the History of Economic Thought (2003) will also be useful while looking for economic and historical concepts.
